Packing Light & Smart for Spring 2008...

Hello Travelers-

As we “fly” into Summer, airline changes just keep coming.  At last count, allmost all airlines have announced they will be charging additional fees for either your first and/or second checked bag.  And, overweight luggage is also costly.  For most airlines, any checked bag over 50 lbs is an extra charge- some up to $100!  This is another great reason to pack light.

Check out some of my new Travel Green & Budget tips & products from my recent appearance on KATU AMNW TV Show. Click here!

Be prepared:  Always confirm in advance with your airline what their specific regulations/restrictions are.  And especially now, make sure you know exactly what, if anything, it will cost you to check your bags (or if they are overweight.)  Planning will save you money.

Of course, it’s always best if you can carry-on everything and not check any bags.  But for some trips, like a cruise, it’s a challenge.  Here are some good tips for packing light & saving money, no matter what your destination:

 * Start with a checklist - then cross things off you absolutely don't need
* Take an empty water bottle through security and fill it up for free on the other side
* Pack your handbag inside your tote bag so it counts as only one bag (most airlines allow a personal bag & a carry-on bag)
* Pack clothing based on two colors: mix, match and layer to save space
* Plan on doing laundry on your trip
* Limit shoes to a total of three pair:  A walking shoe, sandal & runner
* Buy shampoo and other liquids once you arrive
* Pack mineral based makeup (powered so less liquids to worry about)
* Most hotels/cruise ships have a scale so you can weigh your bag before you head to the airport (and re-pack if needed)

To help solve the over weight bag situation, I recommend traveling with an expandable checkable tote bag in your carry-on bag.  In the event your bag is too heavy or you need an extra bag coming home, you can pull it out & move some items from one bag to another.  Depending on your airlines fees, it might be less expensive to pay for a second bag instead of one overweight bag.  Plus you’ll have an extra tote bag at your destination for shopping, picnics & the beach.  Tip:  Be sure to put an ID tag on it.

And remember, if you’re stressing out about having to fit everything into a carry on to avoid an extra charge, maybe it’s worth the extra approximate $15-$25 to stop worrying about it!  If you pack a lunch instead of buying airport food, you’ve saved that much.

Happy Travels!
